Immersed in the heart of Kenya lies a place of breathtaking allure, where nature’s grandeur takes centre stage, and the spirit of adventure awaits. Welcome to Tsavo West, an extraordinary gem within Kenya’s expansive Tsavo National Park. With its rich cultural tapestry, untamed landscapes, and abundant wildlife, this destination captivates visitors from the moment they set foot into its mesmerising embrace.

1. Unveiling the Untamed Wilderness of Tsavo West:

Tsavo West, an integral part of Kenya’s oldest and largest national park, showcases nature’s magnificence on an immense scale. Encompassing over 22,000 square kilometres, this pristine sanctuary has been enchanting explorers and luxury safari seekers since its official establishment in 1948. Though Tsavo West and Tsavo East were initially divided, they were reunified in 1984, creating a massive protected area for wildlife to flourish.

The park’s storied history, passionately recounted by our experienced guides during your game drives, adds an extra layer of fascination to your journey. Furthermore, in Tsavo West, a fascinating variety of wildlife flourishes, inviting you to explore their wild habitat.

2. A Tapestry of Wildlife:

Tsavo West proudly presents the renowned “Big Five“. The regal lion, elusive leopard, majestic elephant, formidable black rhino, and mighty buffalo. In addition, the area is home to a variety of other remarkable creatures. Prepare to be enchanted by the grace and elegance of giraffes as they navigate the landscape, their long necks bending to reach the foliage. Witness the artful lumbering of hippos in their watery sanctuary while nearby, concealed beneath the shade of an Acacia tree, ancient crocodiles patiently await their moment to startle the grazing antelopes and deer that feed on the resilient Commiphora plants.

But the wonders of Tsavo West extend far beyond these iconic creatures. With over 600 species of wild birds inhabiting this national park, birdwatchers are in for a treat. Observe the secretary bird gracefully soaring above the grasslands, ever watchful for prey. Let the vibrant colours of the bee-eaters tempt your camera’s lens, capturing their swift hunting moments. Furthermore, vultures are an essential component of the ecosystem as they help maintain balance. Meanwhile, storks, known for their elegance and sociability, construct vast nest colonies that highlight their strong sense of community.

3. The Majesty of Chyulu Hills:

Before venturing into Tsavo West, prepare to witness a landscape that exceeds even the wildest imaginings, inspired by African wilderness. The splendour of Chyulu Hills unfolds before your eyes, a mesmerising sight punctuated by occasional rock formations and teeming with a wide variety of wildlife.

4. The Vitality of Mzima Springs:

A visit to Tsavo West is incomplete without immersing yourself in the life-giving waters of the Mzima Springs. Serving as a vital source of fresh water during times of drought, these springs flow from the dormant Chyulu Hills volcanic range to the north of Tsavo West. Embark on an exciting bush walk guided by our knowledgeable staff, exploring the lush vegetation and encountering the wildlife that thrives around these springs.

If you are considering an African safari with family members this year, then you are in for a remarkable and unforgettable experience as Finch Hattons celebrates its 30th anniversary. We have carefully crafted our top safari trip guidelines that can make your family vacation even more exceptional as you gear up for this exciting adventure into the heart of Africa.

Planning a family safari can be daunting; Where do I go? What do I pack? What activities are there for the children? With our extensive experience in welcoming countless guests into the Finch Hattons family, we are here to offer our expert guidance to help you confidently and enthusiastically plan your next or first family safari in Africa.

THE BEST TIME TO PLAN AN AFRICAN SAFARI WITH YOUR FAMILY

Planning an African safari vacation with the kids is a thrilling and unforgettable experience,  so choosing the right time of year is essential. A good starting point would be looking at school holiday schedules and planning your family vacation. April and May are great times to start enquiring about our Family Safari Experiences for Summer break periods between June and October.

The months of July through October are genuinely spectacular in Kenya, with the greatest wildebeest migration taking place in the magnificent Mara. During this period, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of greener pastures. This is the perfect time to plan a Tsavo safari as an addition to an extended family vacation for the full authentic African safari experience.

While Finch Hattons and Tsavo are prime tourist destinations all year round, the dry season during these months makes for excellent wildlife viewing and stunning sunsets. Alternatively, if your family is keen on experiencing vibrant birdlife, the wet season from November to May is ideal. During this time, migratory birds flock to East Africa, displaying a spectacle of stunning colours and melodies. Moreover, the lush greenery and blooming flora make for breathtaking scenery.

While these months provide exceptional experiences, planning a family safari vacation during the low season (March to May and November to December) can offer excellent rates and a more intimate safari experience.

No matter what time of year you choose to go on an African family safari, our reservations team is ready to help you plan a tailor-made family safari to ensure a memorable experience for all.

VISAS AND VACCINATIONS

The treasures of Tsavo offer boundless beauty and wild encounters for families seeking a once-in-a-lifetime safari adventure. To ensure the very best experience that our camp has to offer, it is important to prepare well in advance.

Visa requirements may differ for UK, US and European adults and children over the age of 6. This is why it is advisable to research and obtain the appropriate visa well in advance. Speak to your travel agent about the necessary travel documents you will require for a seamless journey.

For some travellers in certain countries, a yellow fever vaccination is required. If you are travelling with elderly family members or children with chronic conditions, remember to pack your essential medicines before you leave. During your planning, it’s best to consult with your local medical professional and the travel agent before embarking on your journey to Finch Hattons.

While exploring Africa’s vast and diverse terrain, you may also encounter a range of climates. It’s not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day, so pack appropriately. From light layers to rain gear, it’s always better to be prepared for any weather condition.

PACKING FOR YOUR AFRICAN SAFARI WITH FAMILY

Preparing for an African family safari trip to Finch Hattons requires thoughtful packing. The vast open landscapes and scorching African sun make packing appropriate clothing and accessories essential.

Loose-fitting and breathable garments, along with wide-brimmed hats or peak caps, are ideal for keeping cool during the day and providing shade and protection from the sun’s UV rays. In addition, remember to pack a high-SPF sunscreen for family members and children with fair skin to apply regularly during your magnificent guided family game drives.

It is crucial to bring comfortable walking shoes for walking and hiking expeditions through the magnificent Chyulu Hills and wondrous Cloud Forest. We have equiped our luxury tented suites with eco-friendly insect spray, which may come in handy during evening excursions.

A family safari trip can also provide ample opportunities for children to explore and learn about nature and conservation. Packing binoculars can add to the excitement and allow for close-up views of the wildlife. For children who enjoy reading or listening to stories, consider bringing some audiobooks and electronic devices to keep them entertained during downtime.

A Family Safari in Africa: 3 Reasons this is a Must-Do https://finchhattons.com/a-family-safari-in-africa-3-reasons-this-is-a-must-do/ Wed, 20 Jul 2022 09:08:01 +0000 https://finchhattons.com/?p=40 Let us take the hassle out of choosing your next family safari in Africa by giving you three great reasons why you should visit Finch Hattons!

There is no doubt that children make our world unique, and when you put them in natural surroundings, they seem to blossom with infectious enthusiasm literally. That is the sentiment of parents who brought their families to Finch Hattons in Kenya. One such father was amazed at how his once quiet son, generally zoned in on his PlayStation, became the most expressive and energetic child they could ever hope for. Likewise, a mother gushed about how her daughter fell in love with nature and animals and now wants to explore a career as a vet.

No, we don’t perform magic tricks for your children and help them with their future career paths during your stay, but we expose them to the wonders only a family safari in Africa can offer.

Your next destination – A Family Safari in Africa

Whether it’s because we all, at some point in our heritage, lived out in the open, experiencing the raw beauty and splendour of a boundless ecosystem, when put back in that environment, we realise we were not genuinely living before.

With over 22 000 square kilometres of semi-arid lands and rainforests, volcanic lava fields, ancient caves and landscapes that seem to go on forever, you feel like a child in a candy store. However, our candy is healthier and will induce a high that will last a lifetime.

If you’re unsure where your next family vacation will be, let us help you with those three reasons.

Reason 1: The Young Explorer’s Club

We are all earth children, and the Young Explorer’s Club ensures your little ones leave with pride. Besides giving them the educational journey of a lifetime, we make their experience with us memorable. Their time at Young Explorer’s Club is all about them, instilling a lifelong passion for the bush and, yes, often leading them to more extraordinary adventures outside of Finch Hattons borders. We aim to remind them of their ancestral history and help them go forward to conserve nature permanently.

Reason 2: Activities to Thrill and Delight

Imagine you had never tracked an animal before, looked out for little paw prints and heard the call of an eagle mother flying to feed her hatchlings. Imagine never having seen a field of flowers so beautiful that you think you’re looking at an oil painting. Our little adventurers need not imagine. At Finch Hattons, as part of your family safari in Africa, we will take them on guided walks explaining the wonders of all flora and fauna. We will teach them how to track animals from their footprints, spoor and calls. Our experienced guides have much knowledge surrounding the history of Finch Hattons, the Tsavo landscapes, ecosystems, geology and wildlife. You may have to drag them away … just a warning.

Reason 3: Bonfire Family Time

Fire has warmed, fed, and secured us for years, so what better way to bond with your family than around our magnificent nightly bonfire? So here we welcome the parents to watch movies under the stars on our big screen and listen to the fascinating folk stories and myths our Maasai guides are adept at telling. You will undoubtedly feel like a child all over again.

And, when all is said and done, and you’re patting yourself on the back for indulging in this family safari in Africa, you can wrap your angels up and slip them into their warm beds for a good night’s rest. But, believe us, they will need it for the next day’s adventures.

Please visit our website for more information and to book your next family safari in Africa. And do behold the magic on our Instagram page.

Making it to the top of many bucket lists is an African Safari. The word “Safari” means “Journey” in Swahili, and it is a journey! Nowhere else on earth offers incredible wildlife in diverse and expansive wilderness settings.

Origins of The African Safari

Long before Robert Redford mesmerised a generation of women and men alike with his dashing portrayal of Denys Finch Hatton in Out of Africa, the idea of an African Safari had already captured the hearts & imaginations of many that came before. However, this romanticised version of the Safari was far from its origins.

Safaris were, in essence, a hunting trip reserved for the wealthy looking to conquer new frontiers, with the grand prize being the “Big 5”; Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Buffalo. These trophies were displayed proudly to peers whilst recounting harrowing experiences of being charged by bull elephants, narrowly escaping death and living through it all, trophy in hand to tell the story.

Even before hunting was officially banned in Kenya, there had been a shift towards preserving Kenya’s beautiful wildlife – shooting creatures with cameras rather than hunting rifles- a legacy pioneered by the real Denys Finch Hatton.

Kenya – The Birthplace of the African Safari

A safari is more than watching amazing creatures in their natural habitats.

The ferocious storm clouds and the smell of rain are gathering and taking refuge under an acacia tree in the afternoon heat. It’s the sights, sounds, peace and noise. Nowhere on Earth will you enjoy more diversity or options for a safari than in Kenya- the birthplace of the African Safari.

Here, our namesake, Denys Finch Hatton, pioneered the tradition of creating Luxury Safari experiences in the wild, insisting that even the most challenging journey be accompanied by Mozart, crystal glassware, fine bone china and starched laundry. It is a legacy we are proud to continue.

The Greatest Show On Earth

The Main Act

African Safaris are a journey, not a destination. Vast green African savannahs, red ball sunsets on the horizon with silhouettes of elegant giraffes moving in slow motion, a dazzle of Zebras grazing on open plains, and elephant herds making their way to watering holes.

Chirping birds, laughing hyenas and warthog snorts come together to create the Savannah Symphony, each animal with a distinct note and pitch, each with a part to play in the safari soundtrack.

Spectators watch cameras in hand from open safari vehicles, taking in the wonder of their surroundings in awe. Ever ready for the moment a lion begins to stalk its prey or the sighting of an elusive leopard perched on a tree with its kill. It is not just the wildlife that touches the Soul; it is the landscapes, the freedom, and the connection to nature. Each day is different; each sighting is memorable, and each game drives better than the last.

The Supporting Cast & Crew

If the wildlife is the main act, the supporting cast & crew are no less worthy, playing their parts to luxurious perfection.

Finch Hattons offers the ultimate Luxury African Safari Experience. Tented Suites with crystal chandeliers and free-flowing Gin & Tonics to celebrate another successful day of sightings. A dip in the pool to stave off the afternoon heat and candlelit meals paired with full-bodied wines under a blanket of clear and starry African skies – are all part and parcel of the best safari experience on offer.

Awaken to watch the dawn whilst perfecting your downward dog pose on a yoga deck, hike up a dormant volcano to witness the expansive wilderness at your feet, and end it off by enjoying a massage at the award-winning Chyulu Spa to ward off the aches of a bumpy day’s drive.

The Perfect African Safari

With so many exciting safari options, we can curate the ultimate African Safari experience for you.

Using Finch Hattons as a base, combine two of Kenya’s best Camps, Finch Hattons & Sir Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri, for the ultimate Out of Africa experience. Alternatively, retreat to the plains of Laikipia to experience the wonder of Segera or hop on a flight to dip your toes in the Indian Ocean & Kenya’s sunkissed, white sandy beaches.

Kenya has it all! Follow and share your experience on social media.

Having lived in Africa for nearly two decades and as a travel writer for half of that time, I have seen a fair bit on and off the beaten safari track. But, there comes a time when the perfect safari is no longer about seeing animals roaming around on the savannah; you have noticed that many times. Instead, it becomes all about landscapes and unique wildlife situations. And, of course, to be out there in nature, preferably with the rare feeling of being the only person on the planet.

I have seen a lot of beautiful places in my life. Some take your breath away and make you feel close to God. This is a rare beauty that no manufactured building or monument has ever quite archived. It is the birthplace of spirituality, where time stands still, and you get this peculiar feeling of having arrived home, even though it’s a place you have never been. This is what we found when watching the sunrise over the Chyulu Hills. It is a bit of a journey that, for the most part, doesn’t seem to make sense. You leave the camp at 3.30 am and drive for more than an hour on bumpy roads through the night. But I would do it a thousand times over to experience that sunrise. We have done it three times, and every time we agree that it wasn’t the last.

To me, “luxury” is no longer defined by beautiful spaces with soft sheets and poached eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast. Luxury is the feeling of effortless warmth that people can only create. When you are on this level, it is expected. I love being a guest at Finch Hattons and keep coming back. They have mastered the art of luxury safari.

Firstly, there is nothing more soul uplifting than a trip to the spa. At the Chyulu Spa, we offer our guests the most splendid and unforgettable pampering experiences. Complete with a yoga deck, infinity spa pool and tranquil treatment rooms. Our skilled therapists use exotic indigenous ingredients, ancient African wisdom and modern expertise to give our guests the most relaxing experience.

Holistic wellness is more than just a pampering treatment now and then, but rather a means to take genuine care of your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Relax, Rejuvenate and Recharge in the Bush

Regular massage treatments can help calm the nervous system and promote a sense of mind and body relaxation. Continuous massage therapy is a fantastic natural tension reliever, which results in lowered anxiety and decreased depression side effects. As a result of spa treatments, blood circulation increases, ensuring the optimum distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the tensest areas of your body. Our ‘Soul of Tsavo’ massage is perfect for relieving tension and tightness in the body. This signature massage combines rhythmic hand movements and warm poultices filled with volcanic healing pumice and sand.

If you struggle with arthritis, muscle spasms, sciatica or chronic pain, the power of heat in a ‘Mzima Warmed Lava Stone Massage’ can help manage the pain. This deep-tissue massage treatment can also prevent and relieve muscle cramps caused by physical activity, injury and stress.

Lymphatic drainage treatments are oh-so crucial for our body’s vitality. The lymphatic system eliminates waste in the body, so clearing up blockages and fluid in our lymph nodes can assist with skin disorders, swelling, digestive problems, insomnia, and more! Try the ‘Nourishing Body Mask‘ experience at Chyulu Wellness with mineralised clay and nourishing Yangu, Baobab, Aloe Vera and Shea. This body mask stimulates lymphatic flow and leaves the skin smooth and supple.

Rejuvenate Your Skin with the Mzima Spring Facial

Spa skin facials offer various benefits such as anti-ageing, radiance, skin cell renewal and deep cleansing of pores. Generally, giving yourself time to relax and de-stress is a tremendous anti-ageing technique! Your face is the image you present to the world. By treating yourself to regular outdoor spa treatments tailored to your specific skin type – you will begin to look and feel like a brand-new person. Skin experts will recommend the best treatments and products for your particular skin concerns. Treat yourself to the ‘Mzima Spring Facial’, which is hydrating and lifting while giving your skin a gentle exfoliation and deep facial massage with a multi-active skin-renewing serum.

Benefits of Spa Treatments for Weight Loss

Many people support a relationship between spa treatments and weight loss. Deep tissue massages like The Chyulu Experience can assist with breaking down fatty deposits in the body using friction and pressure applied to the skin. Hot spa treatments where the skin’s pores open up and lymphatic drainage treatments will help the body ward off toxins. Certain active ingredients in thermal body wrap treatments will detoxify skin and even fight off cellulite. These treatments would all have to be done with diet and exercise to have a profound effect. Isn’t it nice knowing you get to relax and burn off extra calories simultaneously?

Health and wellness are all about taking active care of your body, mind, and spirit. Your body is what brings you through every good and bad day. Outdoor spa treatments by licensed experts are one of the best ways to improve your physical, mental and emotional health. It is only suitable for you to show yourself some love, appreciation and care. This small act of self-love will genuinely change your life.

Visit Finch Hattons to view our regular spa treatments at the Chyulu Spa – the largest bush spa in East Africa.

So Much More than Just the Big Five

What distinguishes Finch Hattons from the rest is the smile we leave on our guest’s faces. Most importantly, Your experience is about so much more than witnessing the incredible wildlife at our African Safari. It is about creating magical memories so that you can take them home with you forever. Our welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate team know the space intimately. This is not to say that the diverse fauna and flora will not take your breath away. Tsavo is a place that immediately inspires a beautiful connection between nature, wildlife and humankind. For that reason, the standard in luxury camps, Finch Hatton’s hospitality, has become known for delicious fine dining, impeccable service and awe-inspiring safaris.

Five-star Experiences at our African Safari

Our dedication to five-star service and experiences does not go unnoticed. Finch Hattons has received multiple international travel awards:

  • World Travel Awards: 10 times (2005, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020)

  • Under WTA: Kenya’s Leading Safari Lodge: 3 times (2009, 2012, 2015)

We were recently nominated for Conde Nast’s elite awards in 2021 and the Signature Sopa Awards in 2021. There are no missed opportunities to give our guests the highest quality experiences and service. Our passionate and experienced Kenyan team loves Tsavo and considers it their home. All our guests feel this warm hospitality energy and are always sad to leave.

Conscious of the Environment

An essential aspiration for everyone at Finch Hattons is to be conscious of conserving the environment. Therefore, we only use the best sustainable materials at the Camp. For example, our roofs are made from sustainably sourced Makuti palm leaves. This provides a natural cooling effect, and our water heaters are solar-powered.

We specifically chose the Camp’s location for its replenishing natural water springs around the Camp. The spring water is fresh from the Chyulu Hills, bottled, and served to our guests. The springs act as an oasis for wildlife and birdlife; as the Camp is unfenced, animals are free to roam, as they have done for centuries.

The dining experiences at Finch Hattons are legendary! We only use the freshest, locally sourced and organically grown ingredients to complement our ethos of environmental consciousness. Grass-fed beef, fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh seafood delivered directly to the Camp from Kenya’s Coast are examples of what you will find at the table. Enjoy mealtimes amongst the most incredible landscapes, views and vistas with orange sunsets and drinks under the stars. We always leave no trace behind and educate guests on the importance of conserving the natural environment. Tsavo is our home and, at the time, our guest’s home.

All About Family

Here at Finch Hattons, we welcome people of all ages and group sizes. We have incredible experience options for solo travellers, couples and families with children. Our luxury two-bedroom and lounge suits cater for large families and are suitable for disabled ambulant guests. There is a children’s programme for kids over six, to keep the young ones having fun all day. We aim to pass down our conservation knowledge to the young adventurers under our care and instil our passion for nature in them. We offer bush survival classes, guided walks and lessons on Tsavo’s history, ecosystems and wildlife. Parents can share these experiences with their children or take time for themselves.

Lastly, Finch Hattons is a magical place where guests feel at ease. We strive to instil our passion for conserving the environment and wildlife in the Camp by educating our guests and treating them like family. Our superb service has not gone unnoticed, and as a result, we are so proud to be a part of a community that helps connect people coupled with the beauty of nature.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for your next solo, couple or family adventure, contact Finch Hattons, and we will assist with the Tsavo experience to suit you. View our beautiful facilities and experiences on offer here.
